A. I giorni

The names of the days of the week in Italian mainly derive from Roman tradition, which associated the days with the seven visible celestial bodies (the Sun, the Moon, and five planets) and their respective deities. This convention has Babylonian origins and was later adopted during the Greek and Latin periods. “Domenica” is the odd one out because it didn’t keep its original Roman planetary name. In classical Roman usage, Sunday was dies Solis (“day of the Sun”), like in English Sunday. The name was replaced with the religious dies Dominica (“the Lord’s day”), from Dominus = “the Lord.”
